How Laser Therapy Can Help Your Pet

Laser Therapy (photomodulation) is the use of specific wavelengths of light on various parts of the body to achieve therapeutic effects. This photobiological reaction helps stimulate tissue regeneration, improve healing time, increase circulation, decrease swelling, and reduce pain.

What’s Involved in the Laser Therapy Process?

There is no sedation or special restraint required for the treatment, and pets are very relaxed and comfortable during the entire process. Treatments vary in length and time depending on the condition being treated. In many instances we recommend a series of treatments lasting usually 2-8 minutes over a defined period of time. Many pets will exhibit increased comfort and improved mobility within 12-24 hours after laser treatments.

Conditions that may benefit from laser therapy include:

  • Acute and chronic ear problems
  • Muscle/ligament/tendon injuries
  • Neck and back pain
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Open wounds (abscesses, hotspots, and lick granulomas)
  • Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease and hip dysplasia)
  • Post dental procedures (increased healing and improved comfort)
  • Post-surgical pain and incisional wound healing
  • Trauma (fractures and injuries)

Laser therapy has proven to be an effective treatment for many cases of acute and chronic pain, rehabilitation, inflammatory conditions, and wound healing.

General Information

There is no discomfort during the laser therapy process. Your pet may feel a little warmth at the treatment area.

There are virtually no associated risks with laser therapy. Occasionally a pet may experience aggravation at the injury or condition site, as the laser stimulates the affected tissues. This usually resolves within 12-24 hours.

Besides the therapeutic advantages of the laser therapy, other benefits include:

  • A non-invasive, non-surgical approach to many conditions
  • No sedation required during the treatment process
  • The reduction and possible elimination of some medications
  • Very little, if any, adverse effects
  • Immediate results, which allow a more rapid return to normal activity and function
