Although your pet may seem healthy at home and on during their exam, many common diseases can only be detected on blood work. Early detection of these diseases (before they show clinical signs) will often allow us to change some things in your pet’s environment to slow down the progression of the disease while treatment is easier on your pet and cheaper for you.
Another reason to consider annual blood work is to gather baseline blood values specific to your pet when they are healthy so that we know what their normal values are. This allows us to more accurately assess their blood work when they are sick.
A comprehensive physical exam once a year is a very important part of your pet’s regular preventative care. To provide the best care possible we recommend combining this with an Early Detection Panel (EDP). This EDP is a package of tests that are offered at the time of the annual exam for all healthy dogs and cats that are between the ages of 1-6 years at a discounted price. At Mayfair Animal Hospital our EDP includes the following tests:
- Blood Chemistry Testing – measures the levels of various substances in the blood, and aids in diagnosing common diseases such as diabetes, liver, and kidney disease.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) – provides a detailed look at the different blood cells, and helps us diagnose anemia, infection, or dehydration.
- Urinalysis – gives us detailed information about kidney function, aids in the diagnosis of diabetes, checks for urinary tract infections, and can alert us about any abnormalities that could lead to kidney or bladder stones.
We look forward to working with you to keep your young pet active and healthy by performing an EDP combined with their annual exam.
