"Dr. Bristol is the best. She gets right down at dog level and works to calm our very nervous Sheltie. She goes through our concerns but also finds things things we need to address. Always glad to have her do the check up on our dog and cat."

Meet Susan Bristol, DVM

Susan Bristol was born and raised in Connecticut, the second oldest of five children.  She always wanted to be a veterinarian and so attended Cornell University to obtain both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees.  While at Cornell, she met her husband, David, who is also a veterinarian.  Upon graduation, they moved to North Carolina.  Dr. Bristol worked in a small animal practice in Raleigh for 2 years before joining Mayfair Animal Hospital in the summer of 1986.  At Mayfair, Dr. Bristol’s special interests include internal medicine, ophthalmology, geriatrics and soft tissue surgery.   She serves as a Wake Medical Volunteer veterinarian, regularly performing canine screenings and medical exams for their Hospitality Pet Program.

Dr. Bristol’s husband has worked at NC State University since 1984, first as a large animal surgery faculty member and later as an administrator.  Currently, he is Senior Associate Dean in the College of Sciences.  The Bristol’s have 2 children.  Matthew is an investment analyst for Guggenheim Investment Partners of New York City and Stephanie is a first year Occupational Therapy graduate student at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Although still saddened by the loss of their beloved dachshund, Daisy, the Bristols are happy to share their home with an exuberant Golden Retriever, Ripley.   Dr. Bristol must satisfy her desire to be around cats while at Mayfair since they cannot have a cat in their household due to severe allergies of family members.  When not at Mayfair, Dr. Bristol can usually be found pursuing her other passion, riding, training and showing her dressage horse, Dalton.

Dr. Bristol is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) where she has served as a District Representative for a number of years and is currently serving as the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association representative on a NCVMA – NCSU continuing education committee.  She has been a member of the Cary Page Rotary Club for 25 years serving in a variety of roles, most recently as the President.  She is an active member of St. Mary Magdalene, serving as a Eucharist Minister.  She is also a member of the United States Dressage Federation and the North Carolina Dressage and Combined Training Association.
